Late Night Thing for January 9th 2008

Week 7 Day 3!!

Tomorrow this feature might have its name changed to Late Night Grind. The only people truly happy with the strike have to be the people who own stock in Netflix. We’ve watched more mediocre movies during the last two months than during any two month interval previously, and only because there’s nothing else to do. Television is fail, why not watch a bunch of okay Paul Rudd movies from the late 90’s instead. They’re “comedies” all right. Try a nice double feature of The Chateau (starring Paul Rudd and Romany Falco) and The 40 Year Old Virgin (starring Paul Rudd and Romany Falco), and then try to explain why the movie that’s heavily written isn’t even remotely funny, but the movie that’s mostly ad libbed is genuinely funny, even after several viewings. (The answer is Seth Rogen.)

Oh, writers. We can’t stay mad at you, we just love television too much. And at least you guys and gals are out picketing instead of being forced to sit through these late night television lineups. Yeesh.

Wednesday:

• The Tonight Show With Jay Leno - TBA
• The Late Show with David Letterman - Morgan Freeman, Tom Brokaw, Chuck Prophet
• Late Night with Conan O’Brien - TBA
• The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson - Emile Hirsch, Wolfgang Puck
• Jimmy Kimmel Live - Slash, Santeri Ojala, Lupe Fiasco

STEPHAN: Apparently at NBC, TBA is code for this is awful television. Then again, even with the WGA’s blessing, Fake Craiggers has only Emile Hirsch and Wolfgang Puck. Oh, who am I kidding? I’ll watch any cooking segment with a real chef and a clown, and I’m genuinely looking forward to Wolfgang cooking late night haggis.

ERECH:The sad truth with the line-up tonight on Letterman is that the A & B slots should probably be reversed - and that’s with Brokaw barely having a career anymore - yipes! Morgan Freeman might be able to act his way out of a paper bag, but he can’t much talkshow his way out of one - not to mention the obligatory Bucket List jokes we’re gonna be subjected to - which now that I think about it, might actually make the interview fun. Tom Brokaw on the other hand is usually awesome on Dave, and anytime there is anyone even slightly news or politically inclined on The Late Show, it suddenly melds this strange gap between watching Charlie Rose at the same time as some Funniest Home Movie of a guy getting a golf ball to the junk played repeatedly in slo-mo - each take slower than the one before. And that takes talent, trust me.

Jay is giving us TBA again, like it matters - I’m thinking after this weeks slap to the WGA face he’s given us, what with the tons of written material (which is sad on more than a few levels, isn’t it?), his guest list is gonna start looking as bad as Carson Daly’s (not that Mike Huckleberry or Palmula Handerson are any great catches, I know). Oh, who am I kidding, the celebutards will pretend for 3 minutes to be mad about it, then as soon as the strike is over Julia Roberts, Steve Carell or John Travolta (and oh boy wouldn’t that be a great cast for a movie!) will be back on the couch hucking whatever their latest movie is that I’ll NEVER see. Seriously, if Travolta started making bad movies from here on out, THAT’D BE AN IMPROVEMENT to everything he’s done for the last 10 years. And if I really think about it for a second, I’d realize all that really bad stuff Travolta has made - pretty much since Pulp Fiction - it was all written by someone in the WGA, so now I’m just all confused. Up yours Hollywood, and the Jay Leno you rode in on!

Everyone it seems, including fake Craiggers, is in love with Emile Hirsch right now because of Into the Wild. I however, am not. And that emotion ain’t likely to change anytime soon either, given Hirsch’s about to be in that GUARANTEED monstrosity Speed Racer (playing the titular character no less!) coming up later in the year. Considering how far off the beaten path my tastes seem to be of late though (I’m looking at you Juno), the damn thing’ll probably get him an Oscar. Ok I’m not that far gone yet, I hope.

If you dare, be back tomorrow when Stephan and Erech consider stopping this whole LNT thing dead in it’s tracks - or as NBC calls it - TBA!
